Common Questions

FAQ — AISI Light Gauge Steel Framing Machine

What is the AISI nomenclature for steel studs?
AISI uses a designation like 600S162-54 where 600 = 6.00in web depth, S = stud, 162 = 1.62in flange (1-5/8in), 54 = 54 mil thickness. Track is designated 600T125-33 (6in web, 1-1/4in flange, 33 mil). The machine is set up to produce any standard web depth across the full range without changing the forming rolls -- only the width adjustment is changed.
Can the machine produce both non-structural (AISI S220) and structural (AISI S240) sections?
Yes. The physical section geometry is the same -- the difference is the steel grade, not the profile. Non-structural framing uses Grade 33 (230 MPa) for partition walls and ceilings. Structural framing uses Grade 50 (345 MPa) or Grade 80 (550 MPa) for load-bearing walls and floors. The machine processes all three grades; the roll material is selected for the highest grade in your product range.
What is the thickest material the AISI machine handles?
97 mil (12 gauge, 2.46 mm) is the upper practical limit for cold-formed stud and track. Above 12 gauge, sections are typically hot-rolled rather than cold-formed. The machine is rated for 33 mil (20 ga) to 97 mil (12 ga) across all web depths.
How does the width-adjustable system work?
The forming rolls are mounted on shafts with adjustable spacers or servo-driven slides. The operator enters the web depth on the HMI, the machine adjusts automatically (servo) or the operator turns a handwheel (manual), and production begins. The full range from 1-5/8in to 8in web depth is covered without removing or changing forming rolls.
What is the difference between a stud and a track?
A stud is a C-section (with return lips on both flanges) used as the vertical or horizontal structural member. A track is a plain channel (no return lips) that acts as the horizontal runner -- the stud inserts into the track. The track web is made slightly wider than the stud web so the stud can slide in without binding. The machine produces both sections; the lip-forming rolls are engaged for studs and disengaged for tracks.
Is the imperial machine compatible with metric drawings?
Not directly -- the web depths and flange widths in the imperial series (3-5/8in, 6in, etc.) do not match metric series (90 mm, 150 mm, etc.). For projects that use imperial dimensions on the structural drawings, the imperial machine is required. For projects using metric dimensions (common in Europe, Australia and the Middle East), a metric-series machine is the correct choice.
How do we get a price for this line?
Send the profile drawing or section dimensions, the material and thickness, the coil width, and your target output per shift. Price depends on the profile, the coil and the level of automation, so we quote against your actual job rather than a catalogue figure.
What is the production speed?
Forming speed is 20-45 m/min (standard gauge); 10-20 m/min (97 mil / 12 ga). Treat this as the line speed: real shift output also depends on cut length, coil reloading and how often the profile is changed.
How many forming stations does it use?
The line uses 14-22 (varies with web depth and gauge) forming stations. Station count follows the section — more bends and tighter tolerances need more forming steps, which is why two profiles rarely share one roll set.
What is the drive and installed power?
Drive: Gearbox. Final drive sizing is confirmed against your profile and coil, because a wider or thicker section needs more torque to hold the same line speed.
How is the finished profile cut to length?
Cutting is by Hydraulic flying cut or stop-cut depending on speed. Cut length and batch quantity are entered at the control panel, so a job runs to a fixed schedule instead of being measured by hand.
How is the line controlled?
Control is PLC + HMI; recipe storage for all standard web depths. The operator sets length and quantity on the panel and the line runs the cycle — that is what keeps batch output consistent across a shift.
