Common Questions

FAQ — US Standing Seam Roll Forming Machine

What is the most common US standing seam panel width?
16 inches is the most common panel width for US commercial standing seam, followed by 12 inches for residential steep-slope. The 18-inch width is used for industrial and low-slope applications where the wider panel reduces the number of seams and installation time. Each width requires its own forming tooling cassette.
What is the difference between snap-lock and mechanically seamed?
A snap-lock panel has a seam designed to press together by hand or a walk-along seamer -- the male and female legs click together. A mechanically seamed panel requires an electric seamer that crimps the seam to a full 180 deg fold after the panels are in position. Mechanically seamed gives a tighter, more watertight joint and is required for low-slope applications below 3:12 pitch. Snap-lock is faster and adequate for steep slopes.
What is the minimum roof slope for US standing seam?
Mechanically seamed standing seam can be installed at slopes as low as 1/4:12 (approximately 1.2 deg). Snap-lock standing seam is generally rated to 1/2:12 minimum (2.4 deg). These low slopes are achievable because the concealed clip and seamed joint eliminate all face penetrations. Standard exposed-fastener roofing requires 3:12 or steeper.
What material is used for US standing seam panels?
24 gauge (0.61 mm) Galvalume (ASTM A792 AZ50) is the most common for commercial applications. 22 gauge is used for premium and high-wind applications. Pre-painted steel (PPGI) with Kynar 500 or PVDF coating is standard for coloured panels. Aluminium 0.032in or 0.040in is used where weight or corrosion resistance is the primary driver.
What is a portable site-roll standing seam machine?
A portable standing seam line is a compact roll former mounted on a trailer that is driven to the building site. The machine forms panels to exact length at the building, eliminating transport damage and waste from off-cuts. Panel lengths up to 100 ft or longer are practical with site forming. This is standard practice for large commercial and industrial roofing contractors in the US.
Does the machine include the electric seamer?
The electric walk-along seamer is a separate piece of equipment that runs along the installed panel seam to crimp it to the final 180 deg lock. It is included in our standard package for mechanically seamed profiles. For snap-lock profiles, an electric seamer is optional -- some contractors use a hand-seamer for small projects.
Can the machine be built for our own profile?
Yes. Send the profile drawing with the section dimensions, the material and thickness, and the coil width you intend to run. We confirm the roll design, forming stations and line layout against that drawing before quoting, so the machine matches the section you actually sell.
How do we get a price for this line?
Send the profile drawing or section dimensions, the material and thickness, the coil width, and your target output per shift. Price depends on the profile, the coil and the level of automation, so we quote against your actual job rather than a catalogue figure.
What is the production speed?
Forming speed is 15-25 m/min (factory line); 10-18 m/min (site-roll portable). Treat this as the line speed: real shift output also depends on cut length, coil reloading and how often the profile is changed.
How many forming stations does it use?
The line uses 20-28 forming stations. Station count follows the section — more bends and tighter tolerances need more forming steps, which is why two profiles rarely share one roll set.
What is the drive and installed power?
Drive: Gearbox; precision-ground rolls for seam geometry. Final drive sizing is confirmed against your profile and coil, because a wider or thicker section needs more torque to hold the same line speed.
How is the finished profile cut to length?
Cutting is by Hydraulic flying cut; profile-end cut matches panel rib. Cut length and batch quantity are entered at the control panel, so a job runs to a fixed schedule instead of being measured by hand.
