FAQ — NEMA Cable Tray Roll Forming Machine

What is NEMA VE 1?
NEMA VE 1 is the US standard for metallic cable tray systems, published by the National Electrical Manufacturers Association. It specifies load testing, dimensions, materials and installation for ladder, ventilated trough, solid bottom trough and other cable tray types. Most electrical contractors and specifications in the US require NEMA VE 1 compliance.
What widths does the machine produce?
The standard NEMA series is 6in, 9in, 12in, 18in and 24in (150-600 mm). The machine uses width-adjustable shafts that cover this full range without changing the forming cassette -- width is adjusted by a handwheel or servo motor depending on the configuration. Depth (3in, 4in, 6in) is set by the side rail tooling.
Is the inline perforating included?
Yes. A programmable punch press inline with the forming line produces the NEMA VE 1 slot or round-hole pattern. Hole spacing and pattern are entered at the HMI control and change automatically between product sizes. The punch is synchronised with the line speed so the pattern is consistent along the full section length.
What material thickness does the machine handle?
16 ga (1.52 mm) through 12 ga (2.67 mm) covers the standard NEMA VE 1 strength classes. Pre-galvanised G90 is the most common input material. HDG (hot-dip galvanised) and stainless 304 or 316 are available on request -- these require adjusted roll clearances.
What is the difference between NEMA VE 1 and IEC 61537?
NEMA VE 1 is the North American standard; IEC 61537 is the international standard used in Europe and most of Asia, the Middle East and Latin America. The test methods and load classes differ, but the physical dimensions are similar. Our machines produce sections to either standard -- confirm which applies to your market before ordering.
Can one machine produce both ladder tray and trough?
No. Ladder tray requires a separate rung welding or crimping operation not included in a roll forming line. The roll forming machine produces the longitudinal side rails for ladder tray (which are then assembled with rungs), or complete solid bottom and ventilated trough sections. Specify which type you are producing.
Can the machine be built for our own profile?
Yes. Send the profile drawing with the section dimensions, the material and thickness, and the coil width you intend to run. We confirm the roll design, forming stations and line layout against that drawing before quoting, so the machine matches the section you actually sell.
How do we get a price for this line?
Send the profile drawing or section dimensions, the material and thickness, the coil width, and your target output per shift. Price depends on the profile, the coil and the level of automation, so we quote against your actual job rather than a catalogue figure.
What is the production speed?
Forming speed is 10-20 m/min. Treat this as the line speed: real shift output also depends on cut length, coil reloading and how often the profile is changed.
How many forming stations does it use?
The line uses 12-16 forming stations. Station count follows the section — more bends and tighter tolerances need more forming steps, which is why two profiles rarely share one roll set.
What is the drive and installed power?
Drive: Gearbox. Final drive sizing is confirmed against your profile and coil, because a wider or thicker section needs more torque to hold the same line speed.
How is the finished profile cut to length?
Cutting is by Hydraulic stop-cut, 10 ft auto-length. Cut length and batch quantity are entered at the control panel, so a job runs to a fixed schedule instead of being measured by hand.
